What Is Respiratory Mask Fit Testing?

Any worker required to wear a tight-fitting respirator, half face or full face mask, must be fit tested before using the equipment. This is a regulatory requirement under OH&S legislation across Canada. A proper fit test ensures the mask seals correctly to the worker's face, providing the protection it was designed to deliver.

Quantitative Fit Testing

Uses specialized equipment to measure the actual seal of the mask against the face. Delivers a numerical fit factor result. Required for higher-hazard environments.

Qualitative Fit Testing

Uses a test agent (typically Bitrex or saccharin) to assess whether the worker can detect a substance through the mask. Suitable for lower-hazard half face mask applications.
